Camera: Olympus Camedia C-750 UZ

"Wait a minute... This was supposed to be a fun shot!"

That's what I was thinking, on my way to work this morning, when I saw this wild duck standing there beside the man. It looked quite funny. But when I raised my camera to take the shot I stopped for a while...

I saw the expression on the mans face and immediately it wasn't that fun anymore... He looked so worn out, so sad, so tired of life. My thoughts swept away, judging the man: "He must be homeless, or an alcoholic or a drug addict". Then I immediately felt ashamed of myself. Who am I to know and who am I to judge him? I nodded at him and he saw my camera. He understood my intention and nodded back and then looked away. I took the shot, feeling quite weird about the fact that this shot didn't turn out to be what I thought it would be in the beginning.

Then the moment was over, leaving me with mixed feelings about the situation. I had to hurry to work. I looked back towards the man, but he didn't notice me. I felt that I should have said something to him, but then I decided that it maybe was best this way. He really seemed to want to be alone with his own thoughts. But I couldn't help being curious about the story of his life and why he was sitting there this morning looking so sad.

Edited in Photoshop:

- sharpened the picture
- changed brightness and contrast
- cropped and framed the picture

This is really good, Jimpa! (Jim's your name, isn't it?)

I like these kinds of photos... they give a glimpse of something real and I have many of the same thoughts as you did. I'd like to take pics like this... we have many people looking like this man in the center of town. It's sad...

...and it makes me angry that the government in Norway (Oslo) is trying to "clean the town" by forcing drug addicts, prostitutes and other "deviants" to move away from their usual places to be... so that the "normal" people don't have to see them and be distraught. It makes me sick... :(

Don't let your mind wander. It's much too small to be out on it's own.

"Who am I to know and who am I to judge him?

This phrase is so familiar..

Oh. It was written on one of my journals.. the one where I wrote on "my thoughts on photography"... I know that feeling you had then.

this is very special to me for numerous reasons. i love everything about it, but particularly the "fotographie" logo on the window directly behind, to the left of the man.

by the way: this man lives in every city. i've seen him numerous times on my travels in this life. although there are duplicates of each of us, this man sticks out like a black rose.

jimmy, i love how the outer world (the hologram), is choreographed for you. the world, as it's presented to you and conveyed through your images, tells me more about your depth as a human being, than about the world. this is a sign of an old soul with great depth.

peace,
A.
